"Full of suspense, heartache, and twists you won't see coming, Life Interrupted is a definite must read!"- #1 NYT Bestselling author, Rachel Van Dyken
"If you're looking for a thriller that will enchant you and keep you on the edge of your seat whilst reading, look no further than Life Interrupted by Yessi Smith." - NYT & USA Today Bestselling author L.A. Casey

I am a blank canvas that even the artist in me doesn’t know how to fill. My life started the day I escaped and woke up in the hospital.
Escaped from reality. Escaped from fear. Escaped from him.
Nothing exists before that, and as the days trickle by, I’m positive there’s nothing after that either.
I try though. For Poppa, who hasn’t left my side since I woke up, I try to live.
But every attempt is futile. So I escape again and start fresh on a small island, where there aren’t any expectations to fulfill. Where family and friends I don’t remember can't look at me with sadness and disappointment.
And when Travis Keillar comes into my life everything changes. The memories I’ve lost become unimportant to the memories I’m creating with him. For the first time since I opened my eyes that fateful day in the hospital, life smiles back at me.
Until it doesn’t.
Until he comes back for me.
For revenge of crimes I don’t remember committing.

At the start of Life Interrupted by Yessi Smith, Holly isn't even sure that her name is Holly. That's what the kindly old man calls her, but what does he know?

In the midst of an avalanche of questions for which she has too few answers within her grasp, she struggles to hold on to her sanity, to her grip on reality, meanwhile, the man who held her prisoner for the last six months, and evidently tortured her over the duration is still out there somewhere. Possibly running for the hills, possibly waiting around the next corner to snatch her back again, the only thing anyone knows for sure is that he's some kind of monster. Something in him has broken in such a way that he could do such a thing in the first place.

I simply can't say too much about the storyline without giving away significant spoilers, so I'll stop there. What I will say is that this book provides a fascinating glimpse of the line people sometimes walk between being sane and insane, between being human and being what we reassuringly label an inhuman monster.

Participating in Holly's journey as she navigates her way from complete ignorance through to a growing awareness of who she is as a person and who she's prepared to try and be, we see her grow, even if the new Holly has no conscious memory of being the old Holly.

The path of her journey has her interacting with a wide range of fascinating characters, from that old man at her bedside to the two BFFs who can't stop expecting Holly to be just plain old Holly, to the two men who enter her life with no expectations from the old Holly, simply accepting the new Holly at face value.

There's love that plays a major role in how Holly's recovery progresses, and love that forces a show down as everything comes together. So much love driving so many relationships. Husband & wife, father & son, brother & sister, woman & man all force the cast of characters towards an epic confrontation that will have you on the edge of your seat.

While its certainly far from what one might consider a traditional romance novel, with significant elements of psychological thriller and a dash of suspense, what I can say with certainty is that it was a ripping good yarn, one I'm tempted to go back to the start and read all over again to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Loved it.

Life Interrupted edition by Yessi Smith Mayhem Cover Creations Unforeseen Editing Romance eBooks Reviews

I read the first page of this book and knew I needed to finish it. Right then. I read this book freaking out the entire time. I rejoiced in the healing that happened all the while feeling terrified for all the what-ifs that could happen. I was torn between two very strong competing emotions this entire book. It's a suspense book. Things happen that make you feel like you can't read further because you're so attached to the character you don't want to see the bad. BUT you can't stop reading because her writing carries you through the whole thing. Read it. Read. The. Book.

I would also like to say that I read this book on Unlimited and then bought it because I wanted it forever.

I keep needing to edit this and add things, because things keep popping in my head as to why you need to read it.

I felt strong emotions during this book, like yell and shout while reading this. I think if an author can make you feel that strongly about characters where you'e needing to have a real life physical reaction, it's probably a damn good book.
I broke my cardinal rule with this one and bought a book because of the cover (which, I gotta say, is stunning). Well, that, and I saw the tons of 5-star reviews, which, after having read the book, I just don’t understand! This book confused and frustrated me to no end. Props to the author for a fluid style and lovely prose, but when it comes to the actual story, I was sorely disappointed. Time and again. I kept reading (skimming, later on) just to see it end, to see if it would get better. But it didn’t.

Let me break some of this down (possible vague spoilers in the last section)

For the first third of the book, I thought I was reading a YA story. The characters sounded, thought, were treated as and referred to in a way that suggested the heroine and her friends were teenagers, and I was okay with that. I was intrigued by this horrible thing having happened to her, and this young girl dealing with it to get her life back together. The only clue that this wasn’t so was literally the references to her age, like the author was trying to remind me that, wait, she’s 24! I didn’t buy it.

Then the heroine changed location, and suddenly the book turned VERY adult. From one chapter to the next, the character suddenly became an adult and started acting that way. To be honest, it was jarring, and it completely threw me off. It’s like part way through an amazing Young Adult story, the author decided to change genres into adult suspense, did the barest minimum to alter what was already there (as in, added age references to the previous chapters) and left me wondering… what the heck??

It kind of went downhill from there. This book presented a town and people totally inept in coping with a crime. The whole time I was reading I kept asking myself, Why? WHY wasn’t this crime being investigated—AT ALL, from the sound of it? It seemed like as soon as Holly was released from the hospital, the police closed the case and moved on. No follow-up, noting. WHY didn’t anyone react in any real way to the very real and present threat to the heroine and her family’s safety? There were signs, literally, and no one reacted, except the heroine and her Poppa. WHY weren’t the police combing the area where she was found? You’d think they would… She was seriously hurt and on foot, she couldn’t have gone far from her captor… And it wasn't like there were too many options, given that this was a woodsy area with not too many dwellings around. Logic says, if they'd searched a one-mile radius, they likely would have found where she'd been kept, and this would have been solved before she'd even left the hospital. WHY didn’t the police question anyone, except the one person who didn't remember anything? WHY did the bad guy never get a knock on the door? WHY? WHY? WHY? Didn’t anyone in this town ever see a crime drama? WHY did these characters make the absolute worst decision every single time and get themselves into situations that could have been avoided?

There were so many plot holes and inconsistencies, I couldn’t make myself believe in this world, or any of these people. And that’s a huge shame, because this could have been such an amazing story…
